Brunei is a small country nestled between Sabah and Sarawak in Borneo. Here, the Sultan wields considerable authority in the country’s administration. The country was once a great empire controlling the whole of Borneo. In fact, the name ‘Borneo’ is itself an adaptation of Brunei. Over time, their authority was whittled away by colonial forces, namely the British and Dutch, into a small portion occupying the middle of Borneo’s northern region.
Today, Brunei has a population of about 400,000 people, with the majority being Malays. Islamic elements permeate the culture from the laws to the political climate. Hence, there are no night clubs or discos in Brunei as alcohol is prohibited. The capital city is Bandar Seri Begawan.
As Brunei shares Borneo’s natural heritage, the country is a rich spot for eco-tourism, with large rainforests located mostly in the Temburong district. The natural surroundings are relatively untouched with plenty of rivers for activities such as canoeing and fishing. Jungle-trekking is another popular activity.
Places to Visit
Besides eco-locations, Brunei does have its fair share of historical, cultural and entertainment sites. Each of Brunei’s four districts, Brunei Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong has their own attractions to share with visitors.
