Brunei is an Islamic emirate whose tourism industry has never been fully developed, largely due to the fact that its lucrative oil and gas resources have rendered that unnecessary. A strictly Muslim nation, the nightlife scene in Brunei is stilted – since 1991 the sale and public consumption of liquor has been banned. So it comes as no surprise that there aren’t many bars, pubs and clubs here. In fact when the sun goes down, most people in Brunei choose to simply enjoy a long dinner break. Shopping remains most Bruneians’ main source of entertainment – if truth be told, one of the only things that they grouse about is the country’s shortage of retail outlets.
