Kalimantan Restaurants
Where and What to Eat in Kalimantan
Kalimantan is less homogenous than the rest of Indonesia – the area is home to three major ethnic groups: Malay Indonesians, Chinese and Dayaks; each group comprises a majority populace in different areas of Kalimantan. Roads connect most towns in Kalimantan and the region continues to progress; West Kalimantan is the constituency’s least developed area – home to wild orang-utans, virgin rainforests and idyllic beaches, this slice of Borneo should be on every visitor’s radar.
Most expatriates spend their time in the restaurants of large hotels that dish out Western as well as local Indonesian favourites. If you’re looking for cheap grub, then there are usually plenty of stalls nightly in different districts. In west Kalimantan, the best place for inexpensive fare is along Jalan Gajah Mada; alternatively street food along Jalan Kasumayuda is also reasonably priced in central Kalimantan. Banjar food is one of Indonesia’s famed styles of cuisine and the belauran (night market) stalls along Jalan Niaga Utara draw in the crowds every night in south Kalimantan. Meanwhile, east Kalimantan has late night economical eats around Gunung Kawi, Pasar Klandasanand Jalan Pranoto.
